Just thinking…
“Absolute power does not corrupt. It reveals.” ~ Erwin McManus
“If you’re not comfortable getting to the place where it’s not about you, you’re in the wrong line of work. Humility is seeing God as He is. Pride is seeing ourselves as we’re not.” ~ Louie Giglio on ministry and leadership
“Somebody’s boring me. I think it’s me.” ~Dylan Thomas
“The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because they are generally the same people.” ~ G. K. Chesterton
“I can say that I never knew what joy was like until I gave up persuing happiness, or cared to live until I chose to die. For these two discoveries, I am beholden to Jesus.” ~Malcolm Muggeridge
“Facts don’t cease to exist because they are ignored.” ~Aldous Huxley
“If you are not the lead sled dog, the world looks pretty much the same every day.” ~Anonymous
“Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened. ~Winston Churchill
When God Shows His Power
My son bought an X-box on eBay. When it arrived he found that it worked but it would freeze up after ten or fifteen minutes of playing time. After failed negotiations with the seller on a return and refund, he decided to try to fix it himself. He tried everything he knew, but the X-box continued to freeze. My son decided to sell it on eBay as people were paying decent money, even for broken X-Boxes; though it wouldn’t sell for as much as he paid.
In the mean time, he and a friend found a great deal on a car. It needed much work, but my kid isn’t going to be sixteen for another year so he has the time. The only problem was that he spent his money on a broken X-Box. That is where dad came in. My kid was trying to convince me to front the money for the car by explaining that he would pay me back as soon as the X-Box sold. I wasn’t buying it. I had been talking to him about making hasty decisions and waiting on God to give him wisdom or an answer.
I could tell he was more than a little disappointed that I wouldn’t front the money for the car. He wanted it now. He was afraid that someone would buy it out from under him. I wanted him to wait until he sold the X-Box. As he was about to give up on his efforts to persuade me, I checked my email. I couldn’ t believe my eyes! As we were discussing the whole situation and as he was becoming more and more disappointed, his X-Box sold on eBay!
As we stood around talking after, I mentioned to him the fact that God had just blessed him. I also told him “don’t ever forget God. He can always work these things out if we will let him.” He said: “I never forget Him.” How cool is that? Together, we gave God credit and praise for working this out for my kid.
“Delight yourself in the law of the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
There is nothing like watching God take care of your kid. Thanks, Lord! You are way cool!
Last night at the fights…
Do you remember the cartoon of a hockey game that had the caption of a sports announcer saying “…and last night at the fights, a hockey game broke out…” I have always thought that that cartoon is a classic! Today at church in my message to point out how silly we can be as people, I put a different spin on that cartoon by saying “…and this morning at the fights, a church service broke out…”. It is really silly, though, that fights tend to break out in churches. On one hand it is silly because people fight and “get hurt” (i’m gonna puke next time I hear that from someone) over the stupidest things. On the other hand, we have to realize that in church, more than anywhere else, we are constantly dealing with the most visceral, deep-rooted issues in the real lives of real people. When that occurs, it is often the “sword” of God’s word piercing through the false facade that we create around ourselves and touching the sensitive, sometime painful inner self that we go to great lengths to hide. Realizing that, I think we need to consider that, if fights are handled correctly, tenderly and with grace, much growth can come from them. However, look out! For when a facade is peicered and true self is exposed, people tend to want to destroy. Those types of fights bring much harm to the body and hurt the reputation of Christ.
In the words of Rodney King, “cant we all just get along?” Well, Rod, no…we can’t. But as Kant said, “if we ought, we can.”

Who am I?
Who am I and why should you keep up with my blog? Good question. I am no one and maybe I have nothing noteworthy to say. But then again, I might.
You see, I’m a pastor….whoa wait! I know what you’re thinking. Dull. Boring. Sermons and homilies (for you catholics out there), polyester and ties from the ’70s.
Nope. Not this guy.
Yeah, I’m called to be a spokesman. God wants me to minister. But that doesn’t mean that I have to perpetuate religion. God is real and I want to point people to Him. Not some go-through-the-motion-so-I-can-feel-good-about-me religion. So it may just be that I will write something that could be, well, controversial. I will surely write something that is “non-orthodox”.
And you, you’re sick of religion. If you’re not, you should be. God isn’t about religion. He’s about life. Are you living? Would you like a new life?
